HALLOWEEN

Costume and Candy make Halloween a fun day for kids. While we keep the costume tradition unaltered lets alter the candy. Make it a healthier candy treat. Our kids do not need sugar- laden candy bars with all due respect to the spirit of trick- or- treat, lets treat our kids to healthier sweet treat!

Before you set out to trick or treat feed the kids at home. Let the treat begin at home with plenty of fruits and a few sugar treats as well. Get the kids involved in the Halloween preparation at home. Invite family and friends to share in your home celebration.

Here are some of the treats you could prepare:

Caramel Apples covered with nuts

Chocolate covered Pretzels or Spiced Pretzels

Biscotti (stick an almond on one end to form a finger nail and pipe red color around the finger nail to look bloody)

Lychees eyes (Take canned cherry, press in a white chocolate chip. Put the cherry into a lychee(canned) and you get some eyes looking at you...

Once your kids are back from their neighborhood prowl, remember that one of the healthiest ways to deal with the candy that comes home is to manage its consumption. To avoid arguments when the temptation of candy is staring them in the face, set up the rules with the kids first, before they head out the door to trick-or-treat. Some good tricks that seem to help:

One candy a day and the kids sets the time they would like to have it.

Give some away.

Parents should go through the candy and dump ones that are too sugary.

Enjoy and have fun

Gin & Juice

Not too long ago Oprah had David Murdock (Dole) and a few others on her show. It was about health and longevity. He is supposed to live to be over a 100years. His diet is fish and juicing.

Our health gurus are sure we need 5-9 serving of fruits and vegetables per day. You may not have the stomach for 9 servings/day. But a glass or two of vegetable juice may help you get it.

Juicing will make you healthier. Juicing increases the absorption of the contents of vegetables. Juicing vegetables gives you enzymes, minerals , vitamins, anti-oxidants, all the good stuff your body needs for healthy living. It is a wonderful way to energize and alkalize your body.

If you are a diabetic, fruit juice (including carrots and beets) may increase insulin levels so stick with vegetables. Vegetables juice plays a vital role in stabilizing blood sugar.

Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and cabbage are most beneficial. Cabbage is said to be an excellent healing juice. Broccoli, cauliflower or any other vegetable of your choice can be used.

Cucumber contains potassium and helps maintain healthy skin. It also helps lower blood pressure. carrots and celery has vitamins A,K, and C and a lot more.

Choose the vegetables you would like to juice according to your present health conditions. Introduce fruit to enhance taste. Granny Smith apples, dark grapes or even ginger would make good choices.

Keep changing the vegetables so the flavor is different each time and your body gets a different dose of vitamins and minerals each time.

Some of you could try a new cocktail. Gin and juice.. If you must and if that is the only way you will drink you vegetables. Hey, I would like to know how it works...
Use organic if you can and never say its too much work to wash pounds of vegetables and the jucing machine

Remember the is no comprimise for good health

Cholesterol and Oat Bran

How many time you heard the phrase... YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT...

Eating a bowl of oat bran for breakfast, may help reduce bad cholesterol LDL. Try it, It lowered my cholesterol significantly. I take 1/4 cup oat bran, add 1/2 cup water and microwave for 2 minutes. Add fruits, sugar or milk according to taste. (I also add a tablespoon of ground flax seeds )

Oats contain soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber lowers blood cholesterol. It attaches itself to cholesterol and flushes it out along with the insoluble fiber. The function of insoluble fiber is to provide a good bowel movement. If the poop floats in the toilet, it is an indication that cholesterol is flushed out of your body. (oil floats in water, same principle)

It is very important to be physically active. Eat a healthy balanced diet, one that is low in fats and high in fiber.

If you are on cholesterol lowering drugs , you may continue your medication, adding oat bran to your diet will help.

Eat healthy Live healthier...
